On Thursday, July 27, the locally owned Malone Dairy Queen participated in the national “Miracle Treat Day” that was slated to raise over 4 million dollars for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country.
Together with the Malone Community, The Malone Dairy Queen raised over $2200 for the local Miracle Network Hospital, the Vermont Children’s Hospital.
“We do this every year to help save and improve the lives of children treated at the Vermont Children’s Hospital. These families need our support and together we can, and we did, make a difference,” said Maria Barnes, general manager of the Malone Dairy Queen.
Along with kids games, bounce houses, and a face painter, Dairy Queen held their annual “Blizzard Eating Relay” where teams of five each race to eat a small Oreo Blizzard and be the first to finish. Six teams competed this year, up 2 from last year.
Wearing matching Malone Central School green t-shirts, team “Savages” took home first place followed closely by the local Malone Police Department in second and the downtown Mountain Mart taking third.
“It’s a wonderful event. It’s for a great cause and it’s great to see the community get involved,” Barnes said after handing out the trophy and medals to the winners. “We’re hoping to continue this tradition and make it bigger each year.”

At your hometown Dairy Queen, we are all about family and the community. And with Mother’s Day closer than you think, we want to share our ideas on how to bring joy to that special woman in your life without breaking the bank. We believe that you don’t have to buy fancy things to touch mom’s heart; all you have to do is express your gratitude for her, past, present, and future.
Here are our four ideas on simple ways to express that gratitude.
1. Spend some time together
Since we were little, mothers tend to dote on our every need and rarely think about time for themselves. But ask any mom, and they say they would do it the same way all over again, because spending time with their children is a gift in itself.
So do just that—spend some quality time together! No annoyances, irritation, or neediness allowed, though. This time is solely so your mom can enjoy the time with the ones that she holds dear to her heart—her family.
Take mom out and do a favorite activity with her, and it doesn’t even have to cost a lot of money. Take a walk, sip a cup of coffee together… you get the idea.
2. Make her something from the heart
Store bought cards and expensive gifts have nothing on something that comes from the heart. When we were kids we gave mom macaroni necklaces and homemade ash trays, even if she didn’t smoke. And she always loved them because she knew that not only was it a gift, the time we spent thinking of her when we were making it was truly something special.
So grab some glitter and glue, and come up with something sweet. You don’t even have to be crafty. Spend time making her a garden in the backyard or build a shelf for her favorite knick-knacks. Don’t forget to tell her why you thought of making that particular item for her!
3. Take care of the cooking and cleaning
Whether mom is a five-star cook or a microwave queen, cooking and cleaning has always been one of our mother’s least favorite hobbies. But chances are she did the duty with a smile on her face, and only a few grumbles under her breath.
Whether you take mom out to dinner to save yourself the hassle of the cooking and cleanup, create a restaurant experience in your own home, or nuke a meal in the microwave and watch a favorite show together, mom will appreciate that she doesn’t have to worry about dinner. But don’t forget—clean up after yourself too!
4. Talk about memories together and create new ones
For us lucky ones, we have spent a lot of time with our moms and our moms have spent a lot of time with us. She probably even has way more memories than you can remember of the two of you.
Take time on Mother’s Day to talk about your favorite memories with mom and ask her what here favorite memories as a mom were. Forever cement those memories with photographs of the two of you (use a framed photo as a gift, see number 2). And when you are creating new memories together, make sure you take a few pictures with big grins on your faces. She will forever cherish the memory, and when she sees the picture, she will go back in time and have that big grin on her face again.
So don’t fret over Mother’s Day when you use our 4 simple tips for joy. Use these tips as you see fit, but if you want to fit all four tips into one great event, make sure you check out our cake-decorating event for Mom! Come in, grab a meal with mom (tip 3), and then decorate a cake together (tip 1) to show her how much she means to you (tip 2). The entire time you will be creating a new memory (tip 4).
However you spend the day, we hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
